My ISU Novel - Cold Mountain

For my ISU book, I chose to read Cold Mountain. I chose the book because I am very interested in history and it took place during the Civil War, a very historical time period in American History. However, After I had finished reading it, I realized that it was more of a love story than a historical book. A man by the name of Inman was one of the main characters. In the beginning of the book, he met Ada, the love of his life, when he was building a church for her father. She dropped by to see how it was going. When they were in the think of their relationship and couldn't possibly love each other more, he was sent off to go fight for the north in the Civil War. She was the main reason for his push to go home. He was shot in the neck saving one of his friends and was sent to a hospital. Just before he was able to go back to the war, he escaped the hospital and was forced to kill home guards, people who were asked to kill anyone who ran away from the war. He was able to get to Ada after roughly a month of fighting and meeting different people. However, he spent very little time with her because he went to go see where a man he had become friends with went to. Inman found his friend, however, there was three guards about to shoot them. The guards shot Inman's friend, however, Inman was able to kill two out of the three and just as he was going to kill the third, he was shot and killed in front of Ada. In the end, it showed Ada with two children, it is assumed that their father was Inman.

The Oedipus Complex

The Oedipus Complex is defined as a child who is attracted to the opposite sex parent. For example, if the child is a boy, then he would be attracted to his mother, or if it is a girl, then it would be the girl attracted to her father. In most cases, it doesn't mean much as this happens when we are between 3-6 years of age. However, in the case of Oedipus Rex, it can still happen that when you grow up you can still have feelings for your mother or father. 

Lighting in a Streetcar Named Desire

Blanche always hated when lights were on for one major reason. That being of course is she hated aging. So when the light was on, men could see what she really looked like and although I am sure that many men would say she looked fine, she didn't think she did, and so that led her to try and cover or turn off most if not all the lights around her. She would always try and get compliments out of every man she knew. She tried with Stanley, however, it didn't work in her favour.

A Streetcar Named Desire

After a few weeks, we finished reading and almost finished watching a Streetcar Named Desire. To summarize the play, a women named Blanche DuBois, went to live with her sister and her husband. After many fights with Stanley, Stella's husband, Blanche's mental health started to wear down and the author made it clear that was happening. In the end, Blanche thought that a wealthy man from Texas was going to come and pick her up one night and marry her. Instead, a mental health doctor and his assistant came and took her away. She tried to laugh it off as she was taken away, however, it seemed as though when she got close to the car, her world was coming back to her.

The Milgram Experiment

I chose to do the The Milgram Experiment for this blog post. To break it down, the experiment saw how people reacted when asked to obey authoritative figures. This experiment start just three months after Adolf Eichmann was tried for his war crimes with the Nazis during World War Two. the reason they did this, was to see if Nazis were just doing what they were told and not doing it out of pure hate towards the different ethnicities that were affected. The experiment took place at Yale University in 1963.
